Dissociative Identity Disorder vs. Demonic Invasion

The Scriptures show Jesus ministering to a man who was crazy, labeled by some as Schizophrenic (Mark 5).  Jesus also cast out a deaf and dumb spirit. “He rebuked the foul spirit, saying to it, ‘You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and enter him no more’” (Mark 9:25) and He cast seven demons out of Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9).  However, nowherein the Bible does it say He integrated a person with multiple personalities, also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Jesus was in the ministry of deliverance and instructed us to cast out demons. “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8 MEV).

When we look in the Bible, we don’t see any evidence of personalities splitting, which is what is believed to happen with a person diagnosed with MPD/DID.In the Bible, there is an example of Schizophrenia when we read about the Schizophrenia man delivered.  After Jesus cast the demons out, we see the man sitting in his right mind (Mark 5).  Why would Schizophrenia be demonic and DID not be demonic?  These can both enter as a result of trauma, tragedy or torment.

Christ came to set the captives free (Isaiah 61)!  When we look in the Bible, we see all kinds of emotional ailments, but not one time is Dissociative Identity Disorder mentioned.  If we are created in the image of God and the word of God says we are created in His image, then how can our personality split?  It cannot!  It is impossible for something that God made in His image to split.  “So God created man in His image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Gen. 1:27 MEV).

Times of trauma and intense personal trials can lead to an open door to demonic infiltration.  Through those times of abuse, traumas, accidents and fear, evil spirits can invade our lives.

What about people who say they occasionally lose chunks of time or don’t remember an event or something they said or did?  A demonic spirit can take you into a trance.  Satan counterfeits what the Spirit of God does.  We know through several examples in the Bible and Old Testament plagues that He is a counterfeiter.  It is not a person’s personality that has split and done something they can’t remember doing.  It is an evil spirit that has oppressed them.Think of the times when perhaps you had a conversation with another person that was highly confrontational or intense, and later on they said, “I didn’t say that” or “I can’t remember that.”

The Bible says, “For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Eph. 6:12).  We don’t wrestle against our own flesh and blood (or what we would call our personalities), we wrestle against principalities and rulers of the unseen darkness (demons).

By not dealing with our emotional ailments and seeking the inner healing we need, we can build up self-protective walls.  These walls, or altered personalities as the secular world labels them, can be easier to deal with then the problem itself.  Vain imaginations and false scenarios protect us from dealing with deep hurt, pain and loss.  When we don’t educate on the spiritual realm and demonic issues, people often don’t have an awareness or belief that their struggles can be demonic in nature.  People often become comfortable with these “altered personalities” as a coping mechanism and don’t seek out the true freedom Christ intended for them.

When it comes to ministry, lives are literally at stake.  We must live biblically and minister biblically.  Christ came to set the captives free.  Therefore, let us go back to the Word of God, see how Christ ministered and do the same to bring a person to freedom.
