Discovering the entry point to achieve freedom from strongholds

Emotional bondage is either self-inflicted, generational or caused by a trauma or incident in your life which was beyond your control. When an emotional stronghold has been established, it can be necessary to find the entry point or root cause in order to abolish that stronghold in our life. Inner healing is beneficial because it shows us how the emotional issue became a stronghold. By determining the root cause we are establishing new boundaries and walking out behavior patterns, habits and mind sets so that the repetitive cycle of emotional bondage and does not continually happen.

A practice you can use in discerning the root cause in yourself or another person is called time lining. It is finding the sin or the trauma that allowed the stronghold to enter. Emotional bondages usually enter through the act of another person such as; a spouse committing adultery, a car accident by a drunk driver, being raped or molested or severe, repeated emotional abuse. When these things happen to us, we don’t often see them as tragedies that will affect us for years to come. Through time lining we can identify what tragedy caused the current emotional issue you are suffering with and how to be healed from it.

In order to time line I ask a person (or evaluate yourself) what is the greatest thing holding them back from the fullness of God. As the person reveals an issue such as rejection, depression, abuse or any emotional ailment in which they haven’t been able to receive complete healing; I ask them when they first noticed this challenge in their life.

If they can narrow down an age for example of 13, I then asked them what happened at the age of 12, around that time frame. Try to determine if something happened prior to the incident to cause the fear, trauma or emotional ailment to manifest. If they can name a year or incident ask them again if they can think about anything earlier than that to make sure you have the absolute first occurrence.

In order to close the door to emotional trauma and root out the stronghold, the person must be walked through forgiving the abuser or the person who emotionally or physically hurt them. Once we walk a person through the forgiveness process and take authority over the spirit realm, even sometimes by casting out the demon associated with the trauma, the stronghold has been broken, and the person can start walking out their freedom.

Scriptures talk about people having issues for a period of years.

“Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, ‘Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.’ And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight and glorified God” (Luke 13:10-13).

This lady was bent over for 18 years, which means at some point she was not bent over. When you look at this infirmity, if she was bent over for 18 years, it means something must have happened in the year prior to cause this sickness to inflict her.

We see another example of a sickness for years with the lady of the blood issue.
“Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.” Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?” But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ “And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction” (Mark 5:24-34).

Here again, this woman has a blood flow issue for 12 years. She had been to the doctors and spent all she had. Did any of the doctors look for a root cause or timeline the entry point? No, they didn’t. Obviously, this woman did not always have a blood issue. At one time she was whole and healed. Her faith healed her when she saw Jesus.

Be seeking the past you can remove the feelings you are experiencing in the present and the future. By time lining the entry point, you can go back and forgive anyone who hurt, offended, abused or rejected you and bring healing into your life. Spend some time in the presence of the Holy Spirit and invite him to search you and reveal to you things in your past that need to be let go of in order to walk out your full destiny and freedom in Christ.
